The Debate
A visualization of the 1972 public debate between Wim Crouwel and Jan van Toorn
Role: Publication
Tools: Photoshop, InDesign
Goal: Visualize a stance on the Wim Crouwel and Jan van Troon Debate
Dutch designers Wim Crouwel and Jan van Troon debated on whether or not design is objective or subjective. Agreeing with both sides, depending on the circumstances, I created a handmade book visualizing my stance using the entire debate transcript. Because I agree with both sides, I ultimately wanted to merge Crouwel and Van Toorn into one, creating harmony between the two designers.
For artwork, I collaged their work together, overlapping one over another, to create new designs that complement each other.
Continuing the overlap, for the transcript, I color-coded Crouwel as blue and Van Toorn as red and overlapped them so the viewer could see only parts of each side.
Using color-coded blue and red string, I hand-stitched the book alternating the colors.
